It is earth’s eye: looking into which the beholder measures the depth of his own nature.

Those are certainly true words of wisdom which perfectly describe what such a body of water inspires don’t you think?

Having been to the four corners of this planet, I am very grateful to have seen some of the most spectacular lakes that have left me speechless. One of them is right in my homeland of El Salvador.

Now most people associate negative images to this part of Central America; however I can personally attest that there is far more than what is broadcasted or shown on the media. It is rich in history, culture and natural beauty that deserves far more attention than it gets. It truly is impressive!

During my last visit to “El Pulgarcito de America (America’s smallest country), I had the opportunity to get away from the hustle and bustle (and chaotic) capital of San Salvador and head to Lago de Ilopango for a day of relaxation.

Located only a half hour away from the city center, Ilopango Lake was formed after a volcanic eruption and is the nation’s second largest lake covering an area of 72 square kilometers (28 square miles).

Both national and foreign visitors come to this area so spend the day to bathe, practice water sports, play or rest on the shores and indulge in the delicious gastronomy served in local restaurants.

Being a water enthusiast, I thought of doing something different for a change. Accompanied by my family members, we hired a local fisherman who took us on a boat tour around the lake and being the serial picture taker that I am, I was ready to capture the sights of course.

As they say, life is better at the lake and I can now see why!

Life sure runs at a different pace and it makes you appreciate the surrounding beauty but most importantly to live IN the moment.

We do not remember the days but we remember the moments right? This was one of the most unforgettable ones and I can only bow in gratitude for having been able to experience it.
