You’ve probably heard a lot of hype about Costa Rica by now. Chances are your friends have gone, your family has vacationed there, or you have coworkers who have honeymooned in the rich coast.
Well, all the hype is true.
Here’s why Costa Rica is so magical, and why you should stop dreaming about it and just book your ticket already!
Plants and animals that will blow your mind
Costa Rica prides itself on being an eco-friendly place—and it should be since this tiny country contains 4% of the biodiversity on the entire Earth! When you’re in Costa Rica, expect to see tons of different animals that you wouldn’t see back home. Things like iguanas, forest and beach crabs, exotic birds like toucans, wild parrots, and vultures, friendly frogs, gorgeous insects like color-splashed butterflies, giant moths, strange beetles and even a preying mantis or two… and, of course, monkeys!
Great waves
If you’re a lifelong surfer or never set foot on a surfboard before, Costa Rica is the perfect place to get your surf on. Costa Rica has some of the most consistent waves in the world, including Pavones, considered to be one of the longest uninterrupted left-hand surf rides on Earth.
Even if you’ve never tried it, there are other great spots for learning to surf in Costa Rica like Santa Teresa/Mal Pais where the local culture practically worships surfing and there are plenty of small locally owned shops to rent surfboards from or get lessons from mellow world-traveler surfers who simply love the water.
Super friendly people
The relaxed “pura vida” attitude of the Costa Rican people is a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of the cities back home. In the Costa Rican capital of San José, most people have occupations similar to every other major city: lawyers, teachers, nurses, store employees, waiters, etc. But in the hills, you are likely to find farmers of coffee beans or sugar. And even further out, you’ll run into ranchers who raise cattle, horses and other farm animals.
One of the best ways to experience local culture is to find out when the next “fiestas” (local fair/carnival) is taking place in the area and try your best attend it. The fiestas will often include a tope, which is a horse parade. You’ll see ranchers on their well-trained horses, prized steer, and sometimes fun rides for the kids. There will always be plenty of dancing, beer, and great food, too!
Adventure mania
Because of the amazing natural resources found in Costa Rica, and their ongoing dedication toward promoting tourism, you can get a lifetime full of adventure in one Costa Rican vacation. There are so many options: nature hikes, horseback riding, zip-lining, white-water river rafting, surfing, kayaking, snorkeling, sport fishing, yoga, coffee plantation tours, cave exploration, and ATV tours.
Volcanoes
Costa Rica has over one hundred volcanoes, ten of which are currently active. That means you can see actual molten rocks and lava spewing out of a volcano in front of your very eyes and also take a dip in the accompanying natural hot springs that are found at the base of these churning giants. If you’ve never soaked in volcanic runoff, you owe it to yourself to try.
Peaceful easy feelings
Costa Rica is one of the few countries in the world whose citizens are constitutionally guaranteed the “right to peace.” In 1948, Cost Rica permanently dissolved its armed forces, and has remained a forerunner in the conversation surrounding global peace ever since.

Hi traveller soul! Yes, I have friends and co-workers have gone and continue to go to Costa Rica. It’s absolutely so gorgeous there and a good friend of mine at work say all of the pictures paint a very accurate assessment of real life there. He does have the benefit of being bilingual and his wife’s family lives there. It’s become a very popular retirement spot! Good post 🙂
Thank you so much Mike!
